Dental Restoration Options to Repair Teeth

Dental restorations can be used to rebuild and restore the function of damaged teeth. They can also be used to restore the aesthetics of damaged teeth. Tooth decay is one of the main reasons teeth become damaged, but other factors like trauma to the face or habits like nail biting or teeth grinding can lead to teeth becoming chipped, broken, or fractured. A damaged tooth becomes more prone to tooth decay since it loses some of its enamel – which protects it against acids in the mouth.

Popular restorations used to restore damaged teeth

Let us take a look at some of the restorations a dentist might recommend to fix damaged teeth:

1. Fillings

These are one of the most affordable restorations used in dentistry. Fillings are used to close up cavities created by tooth decay. The material can also be used to rebuild the structures of damaged teeth. The putty-like filling is inserted into a cavity once a decayed material has been removed from the tooth. When exposed to air and saliva, the filling hardens, sealing up the cavity and preventing acids in the mouth from getting into it.

Silver amalgam fillings are the most commonly used type of filling, but they have a gray color. This makes it easy to spot teeth that have been repaired with fillings.

2. Composite bonding

Composite bonding involves using resins made from plastics and glass to repair teeth. It can be used to address issues like chipped, decayed, discolored, deformed, or broken teeth. The composite can be matched with the color of the patient’s teeth, making it almost impossible to notice teeth that have been repaired with bonding.

Repairing teeth with bonding involves roughening the exterior of the tooth and applying the composite in layers. The composite is then hardened with ultraviolet light and polished to give it a shine like real teeth.

3. Crowns

A dental crown is one of the most versatile restorations used in dentistry. Also called a cap, it is used to cover the visible part of a tooth. The crown helps to keep what is left of the tooth intact, and it protects it from bacteria, acids, and bite forces.

The crown also restores the appearance of the damaged tooth, improving the patient’s smile. Some of the issues that can be addressed with crowns include broken, fractured, discolored, chipped, and deformed teeth.

Placing a crown on a tooth involves removing enamel from its sides to create a better fit for the crown. This is an irreversible procedure, so the tooth will always need to be protected with a restoration in the future. Each patient gets a customized crown that is made from an impression of their mouth. The impression is sent to technicians who make restorations in a lab. The customized restoration is sent back to the dentist in about two weeks.
